Mobile Gambling in Africa

Tuesday, March 2nd, 2010

Gone are the days of online gambling being the popular format to gamble from; in South Africa, it seems that the mobile gambling community is providing the perfect manner from which to play all the best casino games from.

It is estimated that more than 500 000 people choose to gamble at an online casino, with a large percentage of that coming from the mobile gaming users. It is also believed that the gambling industry is worth about ZAR800 million per annum and this is just the tip of the iceberg, as this figure seems to be on the rise with mobile gaming technology improving and more gamers able to download casino software to their handsets.

There are still legality questions that seem to be brought up over the gambling industry in the country, as gambling online is still deemed illegal; but there has been progression from the government who are currently reviewing the gambling industry within the country. There is some expectation from certain corners that the government will change state law to allow for mobile gambling to occur but at present, there is no clear indication of government’s stance on the matter.

Due to the unclear nature with which state law holds over gambling in the country, online operators have been able to continue their operations unscathed. Most of the online casino sites are located off the coasts of South Africa and as such, many argue that because of this, players are said to be not gambling from the country itself, as this would be illegal.

This is the one grey area that the South African government need to set some kind of clarification on, as online casino operators will continue to accept player bets until this is explained in more detail.
